Which To Choose Between Mr. Coffee vs Keurig for K-Cups

In a previous post where we talked about best rated K-Cup brewers that are not by Keurig, Mr. Coffee Brewer had to be on the list. It is very similar to Keurig’s K55 model, another popular brewer. So similar, in fact, that it makes you wonder why to choose one over the other and which would be the best choice. And that’s what we’re here to find out!

Features of Mr.Coffee Single Serve Coffee Brewer BVMC-KG6-001:

What Is The Difference Between Mr. Coffee and Keurig K55 Brewers?

You’ve probably noticed by now, the two brewers have the same brew sizes and brew the same K-Cups. So is there any actual difference between them?

Well, there are slight differences that could make your experience better and swift your decision for one over the other:

  • The Keurig K55 has a slightly larger water reservoir. 8 oz larger to be exact (48 oz vs 40 oz). This means you get about one extra brew from K55 over Mr Coffee’s before refilling.
  • Keurig K55 has a Descale indicator that lets you know when it is time to clean your machine. An ‘Add Water’ indicator is available on both machines.
  • Last but not least, the K55 comes with a sample pack of 6 K-Cups to get you started. And it includes water filters that ensures you’re using the best filtered water for your coffee. Mr Coffee provides a pack of 5 K-Cups, but does not come with water filters.

Keurig K55 Review and Comparisons with K45, K250, K15

In this post:

The Keurig K55 is one of the most popular choices for someone who is buying a Keurig for the first time. It gives you the basic Keurig features at a very reasonable price and it works with a wide range of K-Cups from different brands, so you can enjoy many drinks from coffee, tea, hot chocolate and more.

Features of the K55 are as follows:

  • 48 oz water reservoir with water filter.
  • Choose from 3 cup sizes: 6, 8 or 10 oz.
  • Button controls, with a button dedicated for each cup size.
  • Light indicators show you heating process, add water alert, descaling alert and auto-off.
  • Removable drip tray allows you to fit a larger cup size under coffee spout.
  • Your K55 will include a refillable K-Cup filter that allows you to enjoy your favorite coffee ground.

Who Is The Keurig K55 Best Suited For?

  • The K55 is great for a single user or a small family, since the water reservoir isn’t the largest but suitable for multiple uses before needing to refill.
  • If you don’t care about advanced features like a touch screen or additional cup sizes, the K55 will be good fit for you.
  • If you have a budget under $100, the K55 is at that price range (as of the time of writing this post).

This comparison also applies to all Keurig 2.0 brewers (as they work the same way as the K250, with only difference is size and control options).

Technology:

  • The K250 falls under the Keurig 2.0 line of brewers. Keurig 2.0 brewers are more advanced, have more cup sizes, and give you the option to control the strength of your coffee.
  • That said, you should expect different things from the K55 and K250.

Brew Cup Sizes:

  • K55 has 3 cup sizes: 6, 8 and 10 oz.
  • K250 can brew cup sizes up to 16 oz and it can brew a carafe up to 30 oz. Although it brews more cup sizes, it has a smaller 40 oz water reservoir.

Strength Control:

  • The K55 doesn’t have any options that allow to control the strength of your coffee. The machine is pretty much pre-set with no programmability options.
  • The K250 allows you to adjust the strength of your coffee. You can brew a regular or strong cup of coffee. The strong option on the K250 brews slower by pouring water on the K-Cup in intervals, this allows the coffee ground to steep longer, resulting in a stronger flavor.

Controls:

  • On the K55, you’ll find buttons and controlling the brewer is as straight-forward as pressing those buttons.
  • On the K250, there’s a black and white touchscreen that makes it easier for you to program and customize your coffee size and strength.

Type of Pods:

  • The K55 uses K-Cups from many different brands like Starbucks, Green Mountain, Dunkin’ Donuts and many more. There are also many tea and hot chocolate drinks to choose from.
  • The K250 uses K-Cups as well, however, it uses the new version of K-Cups which are DRM-protected. On each K-Cup, you’ll find a white rim that has a code. The machine itself has a reader that reads the code on this K-Cup to identify its type and set the machine to the best options to brew it (you still can change and program it as you like). The K250 can only use this type of K-Cup and not the older type of K-Cups.
  • And since the K250 has more sizes options, there are K-Cups of different sizes available for it: K-Cups for sizes up to 10 oz, K-Mug for sizes 12, 14 and 16 oz and K-Carafe for carafe sizes 22, 26 and 30 oz.

Included Accessories:

  • The K55 includes water filter and a refillable K-Cup.
  • The K250 only includes water filter as an added bonus. A refillable K-Cup and a Carafe are available to buy separately.

Keurig K55 vs K45:

The K45 is a discontinued model and has been replaced with the K55. They are identical, but as the K55 is the newer version, that’s certainly the one you should go for.

K55 vs. K50:

Another name for the same product, the K50 and K55 are the same brewer, but the K55 is the newer version. Of course, we encourage you to go for the newest model, which is the K55.

The K15 is smallest Keurig brewer out there. So it makes a great choice for a single user rather than a family or a group of people.

Cup Sizes:

  • The K55 and K15 brew the same sizes of 6, 8 and 10 oz.

Water Reservoir:

  • K55 has a 48 oz water reservoir
  • The K15 has no water reservoir. You simply fill as much water as you want to brew. The tank is marked with the amount for each cup size, and the machine will brew the full amount you add in at each use.

Controls:

  • The K55 has a dedicated button for each cup size as well as light indicators.
  • The K15 has a single button and that is the Brew button. There’s a light indicator that guides you through the brewing process.

Compatible K-Cups:

  • Both the K55 and K15 are compatible with the same K-Cup pods.

Included Accessories:

  • The K15 includes no accessories. It has no water filter, so it is recommended that you use filtered bottled water to brew your coffee. As for the refillable K-Cup, it is compatible but it doesn’t come included with the machine like with the K55.

The K145 is one of Keurig’s Professional line made especially for office use. It is made for heavy and frequent use and has commercial-grade brewing.

Although the K55 and K145 have the same capacity and brew the same cup sizes, you’ll find that the K145 is heavier in weight, has a heavy-duty power cord and a stronger pump (which means it is much louder than the K55).

Controls wise, as the K55 has buttons, the K145 has a dial for cup sizes and buttons auto-off, on/off power and drain brewer options, which the K55 doesn’t have. Both have the same light indicators, though.

And because the K145 has a stronger pump, it is faster at brewing. It can brew a cup in less than a minute, which is faster than the K55.

Now, just because the K145 is labeled as an office machine, it doesn’t mean you can’t use it at home. Jut bare in mind that it will be very heavy and quite loud.

Note that the refillable K-Cup pod is not compatible with this model.

Which of These Machines Is The Right One For Me?

Here are some points to help you decide which machine to go for:

  • Are you under a strict budget? If you’re looking to spend less than a $100, then go for the K55 or K15.
  • Do you want to brew large cups or a carafe? Then you’ll be happy with a Keurig 2.0 brewer like the K250, which can brew a cup, large mug or a carafe.
  • Do you want to control the strength or temperature of your coffee? This is another option only available in Keurig K2.0 machines.
  • How many users will this brewer serve? The K55 is great for a single or multiple users. The K15 is best suited for a single user due to its small size. The K250 is also a good fit for a single or multiple users, although it has a water reservoir smaller than the K55.
